Resumen:
Previously, we demonstrated that voluntary wheel running and overexpression of thioredoxin-1 (Trx1) reduce infarct size by acute ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) in young mice. However, in middle age mice the cardioprotection conferred by Trx1 was abolished. This study aimed to investigate whether voluntary exercise could restore the cardioprotective effect of Trx1 in middle-aged mice. We used hearts from wild-type mice (Wt), transgenic mice overexpressing Trx1, and mice with a dominant negative mutant of Trx1 (DN). They were divided into exercise (E) and sedentary (S) groups and housed in cages with running wheels for 8 weeks. Afterwards, hearts were subjected to 30 min of I and 120min of R (Langendorff technique). Body weight, caloric intake, and running distance were recorded. The heart rate variation was evaluated through electrocardiography with atropine and infarct size was determined using TTC staining. Data were expressed as mean±SEM and p
