Resumen:
Lightning are associated to several atmospheric processes and it can be an important indicator for the study of different meteorological events. The knowledge of the lightning activity is relevant to human life and infrastructures since lightning events are capable to kill people and cause important damage to the buildings, among other casualties. It is well know that over Argentina occur several severe weather events that are related to thunderstorms. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the frequency and spatial distribution of these events. The South American Environmental Risk Network project (SAVER-Net) is an international project between Argentina, Chile and Japan, under the SATREPS cooperation program. In the framework of this project and with the support of CITEDEF with the Project 03 NAC 022/15, we use several techniques to detect and analyze the lightning activity over South America and particularly over Argentina and Chile. The main line of study is ?GeoRayos? which is a system that provides the lightning activity in real time and includes a lightning jump algorithm (LJA) to anticipate the development of severe weather. Furthermore the project includes the development of a new field mill network ?GINGO? to detect lightning activity in the region. We hope this new investigation line can help to improve the knowledge about lightning activity in Argentina and Chile and to give new tools that allows the alert of the severe event to the population.
