Resumen:
Lightning are associated to several atmospheric processes and it can be an important indicator for thestudy of different meteorological events. The knowledge of the lightning activity is relevant to humanlife and infrastructures since lightning events are capable to kill people and cause important damage tothe buildings, among other casualties. It is well know that over Argentina occur several severeweather events that are related to thunderstorms. However, there is a lack of knowledge about thefrequency and spatial distribution of these events. The South American Environmental Risk Network project (SAVER-Net) is an international projectbetween Argentina, Chile and Japan, under the SATREPS cooperation program. In the framework ofthis project and with the support of CITEDEF with the Project 03 NAC 022/15, we use severaltechniques to detect and analyze the lightning activity over South America and particularly overArgentina and Chile. The main line of study is ?GeoRayos? which is a system that provides thelightning activity in real time and includes a lightning jump algorithm (LJA) to anticipate thedevelopment of severe weather. Furthermore the project includes the development of a new fieldmill network ?GINGO? to detect lightning activity in the region. We hope this new investigation line can help to improve the knowledge about lightning activity inArgentina and Chile and to give new tools that allows the alert of the severe event to the population.
