Resumen:
Abstract Plant essential oils and its constituent moleculeshave been suggested as an alternative to control insect. The contribution of the constituents to the effect of theoil is determined by the interactions occurring betweenthem. Synergistic interactions would improve the insecticideefficacy of the compounds due to the utilizationof lower doses. We evaluated the insecticidal activity ofgeranium (Geranium maculatum L.) oil and its major constituentsagainst Musca domestica L. and studied the toxic interactionsin artificialmixtures of those constituents in the naturalratio. While synergistic interactions were determined in housefly in this study, these were of low intensity evidencing thatthe effect of each constituent was slightly modified by theother constituents present in the mixtures. The search for synergismbetween components is a strategy to improve the insecticideactivity of natural compounds. The synergism helpsto reduce the environmental and toxicological impact due tothe reduction of the dose of use.
