Resumen:
This article analyze the social conditions that allow explaining how and why José Olympio was the publisher that monopolized, by the end of the 1930 decade, the edition of the books considered essential to think and feel Brazil. In general trends, this study observes and analyzes the social, economic and political capitals acquired by this publisher. Firstly, it presents some aspects of his social trajectory: his socialization and initial experiences in the worlds of books; the constitution of his family and the destinies of its members; the construction of a sense of family that included writers, politicians, businessmen and common people not directly related by kinship. In second term, this article interprets the incorporation and uses of specific practices related to the edition of books, as innovative acts of cultural production, as a power differentiated from the commercial bases of bookselling trade. Thirdly, this article focus in the relationships between José Olympio and several domains of the field of power that allowed him to construct his unequal position in Brazilian book world, from the end of 1920 decade in São Paulo to the middle of 1940?s in Rio de Janeiro.
