EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ARGENTINE NATIVE EXTRACT PLANTS ON Haemonchus contortus EGG HATCH

Infection of ruminant livestock by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is a worldwide problem. The use of synthetic chemicals against GIN is associated with the development of parasite resistance, ecological impact and the presence of drug residues in meat and/or milk. The use of herbal extracts is an alternative anthelmintic control method. The aim of this study was to evaluate, under in vitro conditions using the egg hatch assay, the effect of different Argentine native extracts plants. Extracts of ten different plant species were tested against Haemonchus contortus eggs. The following extracts plants were evaluated: Aloysia gratissima, Aloysia polistachya, Acmella decumbens, Bacharis articulate, Chenopodium album, Conyza bonariensis, Equisetum giganteum, Flaveria bidentis, Muehlenbeckia sagittifolia (Ort) Meiss and Passiflora cocrulea. H. contortus eggs (100 eggs/well) were incubated at 27 ºC for 24 h with the aqueous extract of each plant at three different concentrations (1, 5 and 10 mg/ml). Untreated eggs were used as controls. Six replicates for each concentration were used. C. bonariensis and F. bidentis exhibited 100% and 39% of egg hatch inhibition, respectively, at concentration of 10 mg/ml. At 5 mg/ml, hatching inhibition of 100% and 92% was observed for C. bonariensis and M. sagittifolia, respectively. The egg hatch inhibition of all extracts assayed were ≤50% at the lowest concentration tested (1mg/ml). The potential in vitro activity of C. bonarensis, F. bidentis and M. sagittifolia will be further investigated.
