Academic Travel Awards Program.Microfluidic paper analytical devices (μPADs) are portable, user-friendly, and affordable technologies that are one of the best analytical tools for inexpensive diagnostic devices. μPADs can be used for water quality assessment, disaster awareness and healthcare, especially in developing countries. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are electrochemical devices that can be used as biosensors for several applications such as toxicity or antibiotic sensitivity testing and microbial quantification among others. Then, MFC fitted with μPADs technologies provides several advantages for low-budget programs in terms of easy assembly and handle devices with widespread and important applications in environmental and heath monitoring. In this work, we report an environmentally sustainable design for a microfluidic paper-based microbial fuel cell (μPAD-MFC) toxicity biosensor.
