Alzheimer disease (AD) is the principal cause of dementia in the elderly. Onehistopathological hallmark of AD is the presence of senile plaques, extracellular deposits principally composed of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides, which are normally surrounded by reactive glia. We studied early alterations in hippocampal astrocytes and their progression during the degenerative process in PDAPP transgenic mice, a model of AD. At 3 months of age, before plaques formation, we found less number of GFAP+ astrocytes in the stratum radiatum under CA1 (p
