Resumen:
Arenaviruses are a class of RNA viruses dangerous for human health since several members of the family can cause severe hemorrhagic fevers in the endemic areas of Africa and South America. Lassa virus, agent of Lassa fever in West Africa, and Junin virus, agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever in Argentina, are the most recognizable pathogens in the family. This chapter summarizes present information about epidemiology and transmission of pathogenic arenaviruses, viral mutiplication cycle, human disease pathogenesis and immune response, current treatment and most recent strategies for chemotherapy and vaccine development.
