Resumen:
Abstract: The Andalhuala Formation (Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene) outcrops at different localities of Catamarca, Tucuman and Salta provinces. It is mainly composed of mudstones, sandstones and conglomerates with sporadic tuffaceous beds, recording continental deposition related to different fluvial settings. At the Encalilla locality (Tafí del Valle, Tucumán Province), the unit is characterized by two main facies. The first comprises mudstones with local occurrences of sandstones, representing deposition in a flood plain subenvironment. The second is composed of sandstones, gravelly-sandstones and conglomerates, representing sedimentation in a braided channel belt. Overall, the facies assemblage is interpreted to have been deposited in an anastomosing fluvial system, with subenvironments comprising a braided channel belt and a floodplain area with crevasse splays.
