Introduction:Aqueous humor contains antioxidants that may be exogenous (β-carotene, vitamin C, or vitamin E) or endogenous (enzymes or proteins DNA repair). When free radicals levels increased and antioxidant defense is not enough, some eye diseases may appear.Amphiphilic ascorbic acid derivatives have demonstrated the ability to form supramolecular aggregates (nanostructures) retaining the ability of ascorbic acid to remove radicals.Key words: Aqueous humor, antioxidants, nanostructures, ascorbyl laurateObjective:Evaluate the antioxidant effect after instilation of ascorbyl laurate based nanostrucures (coagel) in ocular normotensive (ONR) and hypertensive rabbits (OHR)Material and methods:Coagels of ascorbyl laurate (COA-ASC12) were obtained by heating above the critical micellar temperature and subsequent cooling.White New Zealand normotensive rabbits (IOP average = 11.39? 0.92 mmHg) weighing 2?2.5 kg were used. Hypertension model was obtained by αquimiotripsina intracameral injections.The antioxidant capacity was determined by the reduction reaction with iron and tripyridyl triazine and total proteins were measured using Bradford reagent.Results:The antioxidant capacity (vs time) in aqueous humor of ONR increased with a maximum of 3050.985+/-81.225 uM FeSO4. 6 H2O / mg protein at 4 hours after instilation. A significative increase in OHR (240.977 +/- 8,666 uM of FeSO4. 6 H2O / mg protein) was observed at the same time. In addition, the antioxidant capacity in the aqueous humor of OHR was 10 times lower than in ONRConclusions:This type of nanostructures applied on the eye surface were able to modify the antioxidant capacity of aqueous humor. An increase in normotensive and hypertensive rabbits was observed so that could be attributed to increased concentrations of ascorbic acid (as laurate) in the anterior chamber and consequently may be an indication to advance in the treatment or prophylaxis of several eye diseases such as glaucoma.
