Resumen:
Introduction. With the exceptions of the common cold, head lice affect more school-aged children than all other communicable diseases combined. Pharmacists should assume a leadership role in the community effort to develop an approach to controlling head lice and to promote the effective and rational use of the pediculicidal formulations available. Objective. To implement an outreach activity in Pharmaceutical Technology I (Pharmacy degree, FCQ-UNC) related with the prevention and treatment of pediculosis and to assess student perceptions.Design. a non-mandatory practicum was implemented in two steps (S1 and S2). In S1 the students compounded a batch of permethrin lotion 1% w/v in the Pharmacy Service of National Clinical Hospital applying Good Compounding Practices to obtain traceable formulations. In S2, they prepared educational materials about head lice control and designed training activities and games for parents and children that were performed during a visit to a marginal neighborhood. At the end of the activity the compounded formulations (S1) were distributed to the parents. A post-activity anonymous on-line survey was administered using a "Forms" Google® application.Results. Thirty-nine students participated. The response rate of S1 and S2 surveys was 50% (17/34) and 75% (15/20), respectively. Twelve students though that the objective of S1 and S2 were 80-100% reached and 3 though in a 60-80%.Ten students though that S1 strengthen their practical knowledge in a percentage of 80-100% and 7 students in a 60-80%. Most of them (15) though that the time dedicated on the activity was enough. The 100% of the students thought that the neighborhood selected was appropriated. The practicum allowed the students to incorporate and put in practice theoretical knowledge and to become aware of the pharmacist social role and their responsibility in compounding formulations.
