Resumen:
Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite powder was synthesized fromnatural bovine and porcine bone by a milling method. The bonehad been deproteinized by two different methods before it wascalcined to different temperatures (800 and 1100ºC). The resultingproduct was milled to obtain a nanometric material. Characteristicsof the powders were then investigated by different evaluations suchas determination of the particle size, composition and crystallinityof the material, and cytotoxic effect of hydroxyapatite. The particlesize of this natural hydroxyapatite varies between 100 nm and 100µm. The X-ray diffraction showed that the crystallinity degree andcrystallite size progressively increased with the calcinationtemperature. Calcium and phosphorous were the main elements, the Ca/P ratio of this natural hydroxyapatite varies between 1.11and 2.79. Samples did not show cytotoxicity.
