Resumen:
Background and aims : Ultrasound measurement of carotid plaque area (TPA) is a noninvasive method for identifyingpatients at higher risk of cardiovascular events. Previous studies demonstrated that intensive medical therapy reducesTPA. In this study we investigated whether or not serum cholesterol levels, based on recommendations, decrease TPA.Methods: We measured baseline TPA, blood pressure (BP), body mass index, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, HbA1c,creatinine and uric acid. After 10±1 months patients were reevaluated to investigate changes from baseline. The studywas approved by the Blossom DMO Argentina ethics committee and informed consent from each participant wereobtained. Results: Among 158 patients enrolled between July 2012, and July 2014, 52% were male, BP was 132±1/81±1 mmHg,BMI 30±0.5 kg/m2, and TPA 42.9±3mm2. After 10±1months of treatment, three groups were identified.Group 1 had a reduction of TPA (52±8 to 35±3mm2, p
