Structural alterations of the chorionic villi by T. cruzi have been described in vitro, but little is known about trophoblast renewal in placentas of pregnant women suffering the disease and its relation with congenital transmission. Obj ective: To analyze structural alterations and changes in the renewal of the human trophoblast that could be associated with the congenital transmission of Chagas disease. Met hods: paraffin-embedded blocks of chagasic placentas with Chagas congenital transmission (CHWT) or not (CHNT) to the fetus, and normal (N) placentas were used. Immunohistochemistry for ki67 and syncytin, as cytotrophoblast (CTB) proliferation and syncytiotrophoblast (STB) fusion markers respectively, was performed. Their expressions were quantified using the software Axiovision.4.8 and ImageJ 1.46 in pictures obtained at 400x. Proliferation Index (PI): Ki67 (+) nuclei /100.000 mm2 of analyzed area. Fusion rate: Syncytin STB (+) marked area of total analyzed area. STB detachment areas were analyzed in Hematoxylin/Eosin stained sections. Statistics: T Test, ANOVA- Bonferroni (Significance: p
