Resumen:
OBJECTIVES: Analyze the recurrence of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors through the expression of Ki-67 and Muc-1 biomarkers in tumor tissues. METHODS: A study pool of 36 individuals of both sexes, aged 19-89, was divided in four groups: benign tumors without recurrence (BTwR; n=14) and with recurrence (BTR; n=7), malignant tumors without recurrence (MTwR; n=7) and with recurrence (MTR; n=8). Tumor samples were collected by surgical excision. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses of Ki-67 and Muc-1 expressions on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissue were performed. The sample values of both biomarkers (in μm2) were compared by Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05). RESULTS: The mean values found, in the four groups, of the Ki-67 marker were: 0,86±0,53 (BTwR), 1,57±0,79 (BTR), 2,57±0,79 (MTwR) and 2,25±0,89 (MTR) whereas the values of Muc-1 were: 1,71±0,83 (BTwR), 1,86±1,21 (BTR), 1,86±1,07 (MTwR) and 2,25±1,16 (MTR). Statistically significant differences were found when comparing the expression of Ki-67 between BTwR and BTR (p=0.03), with higher values in BTR. However, no statistically significant differences were observed, neither for KI-67 between groups MTwR/MTR, nor for Muc-1 between groups BTwR/BTR and MTwR/MTR. CONCLUSION: According to this study, a value of Ki-67 ≥ 1.57 in benign tumors of salivary glands could be a risk indicator of recurrence of these tumors. Such values should prompt the monitoring and control of these patients after surgical treatment. Although no statistically significant relation was found neither between the expression of Ki-67 and the recurrence of malignant tumors, nor in the expression of Muc-1 and benign and malignant tumors, further research is required in this important topic for prognosis of salivary glands tumors.Grants from Secretaría de Ciencia y Tecnología.
