Descripción:
This report presents an evaluation of an NSF grant for the Computer Science for Oregonproject. The main goal of this educational project is building the capacity of the State of Oregonto offer culturally relevant high school CS (Computer Science) to underrepresented students, preparing teachers for inquiry-based, equitable computing courses through year-long PD(professional development).Based on the observation of the PD week, it becomes clear that the combined experience anddiverse background of the team members allows educational issues to be addressed frommultiple points of view: the student, the classroom teacher, the school administrator, theuniversity community, the policymaker, and the researcher. For example when discussing howhigh school CS excludes minorities, one of the co-PIs would compare and present theconsequences of segregation at college-level CS education while another would offer ananalysis of the gender divide. In addition, all team members bring a critical race, ethnic, andgender perspective to analyze educational problems because they have experienced and/orsystematically studied educational inequities around CS education. This was evident when teammembers shared how the IT industry had segregated them because of their gender, or whenschool counselors influenced their course choice because of their ethnicity. The diversity amongthe team members contributes to genuinely promoting equity in CS education.
