Content, pictures and normativity

Upon the analysis of different pictorial mediums, I will criticize the dichotomical distinction between icons and sentences. The analysis suggests the existence of differences of degree between pictorial and linguistic system. However, I argue, that these gradual differences imply interesting features on the content of pictorial and linguistic representation and also on the way they interact with each other. The problem about the nature and structure of the content of pictorial representations is particularly important for the question of normativity since it is intimately related i) to the way in which satisfaction conditions of a norm operate (from more specific to more general ways); ii) the range of objects that can be subject to a norm; iii) and to the way in which different forms of representational mediums interact in a normative manner.
