Resumen:
Disturbance generated by the intertidal sewage-discharge on abrasion platforms in the SW Atlantic produced a negative impact on native benthic organisms, including the invasion of Boccardia proboscidea, a polychaete from the Pacific Ocean. In sewageimpactedsites, this species build reefs of 30 cm height and almost 1,000,000 ind.m-2. The study was carried out from June-2008 to November-2009 and the samples were collected in two sites: Impacted and Control. The reefs dynamics was analyzed measuring percent cover. B. proboscidea body size (total length and fifth chaetigers width); tube size (superior and middle diameter) as well as sediment selection for the tubes? construction were measured and compared between sites. Reefs covered 80-100% of impacted site in summer and disappeared at the end of this season. Specimens collected from reefs (Impacted site) were larger and narrower than specimens collected in patches (Control site). Tubes were built by B. proboscidea using the sediment particles available in the environment. Differences found in body and tube size (diameter and grain size) could be due to the presence of the reefs induced by sewage-discharge.
