Resumen:
For the last years, the idea of the polycyclic structuration of the Central Andes has taken center stage, including, besides the classical Miocene phase, earlier mountain building episodes (from Late Cretaceous to Eocene). These studies are based on thermochronological data and strongly on the identification and dating of synorogenic strata, and regional mapping of discordances. In this work, we performed a sedimentary profile on the Diamante Formation, the upper cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Aconcagua fold and thrust belt. In this area, the Diamante Formation rocks lie in erosive and angular discordance over the lower cretaceous units (Mendoza Group). On the other hand, we analyze the clastic provenance, both macroscopic and microscopically, identifying two main provenance areas, one to the east which is assigned tentatively to Cordillera Frontal and other to the west, interpreted as Cordillera Principal. In the light of the data obtained here we propose that the Diamante Formation has been deposited in a piggy-back basin, between the Cordillera Frontal, acting as a topographic high, and the Cordillera Principal, uplifted in Late Cretaceous times.
