Resumen:
Mesoporous silica materials are proposed as hosts for stabilizing different pharmaceutical drugs. The cephalexin drug is a first generation cephalosporin. As the average life time of cephalexin is about 0.9 hours, its immobilization and stabilization in a matrix constitutes a very interesting challenge. In this work the cephalexin adsorption from aqueous solutions using SBA-15 mesoporous silica as adsorbent is analyzed. The influence of pH solution on drug adsorption was studied. In order to have a better knowledge about the way the drug molecules interact with the inorganic matrix, the adsorption process was analyzed by applying the computational chemistry Yet Another extended Hückel Molecular Orbital Package. A strong correlation between the theoretical calculations and the experimental results was established, showing that the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction is pH dependent, playing this parameter a fundamental role in the adsorption capacity obtained. It was observed an improved adsorption in acid media, being the maximum for cephalexin adsorption obtained at pH 2.3.
