Resumen:
The used materials for industrial process are generally Fe- and Ni- based alloys that offer high corrosion resistance and high creep resistance, respectively. When the material is exposed to gases containing carbon, e.g. C2H4, it can pick up carbon. The carbon which is picked up by the steel will largely form carbides. The resistance to thermal cycling is reduced and there is a danger of cracks developing in the material. Carburization is the most common cause of failure of cracking tubes for ethylene production and can drastically reduce the life of metal components. In this paper we studied by tight binding calculations, the C2H4 chemisorption on an Fe50Ni50(111) alloy surface. We also analyzed the electronic structure and bonding during the adsorption phenomena.
