Plant beneficial microbes can mediate biocontrol of diseases either by directlyinterfering with pathogens or via strengthening the host. Although phytohormones, recently including cytokinins, were shown to regulate plantimmunity, their microbial production is not considered for biocontrol-effects. Here we identify Pseudomonas fluorescens G20-18 cytokinin-production as key determinant for biocontrol-effects against P. syringae in Arabidopsis, maintaining tissue integrity and ultimately biomassyield. While cytokinin-deficient loss-of-function mutants of G20-18 exhibit impaired biocontrol-effects, genetic complementation with cytokinin biosynthetic genes restores cytokinin-production and biocontrol-effects, whichcorrelates with differential cytokinin-levels in planta. Arabidopsis mutant analyses revealed the necessity of functional cytokinin-perception inplants combined with defense signaling by salicylic acid to fully establish thisbiocontrol-effect. This identification of microbial phytohormone-production as determinantof biocontrol-effects offers novel options for developing successful integratedplant protection strategies needed to cope with future challenges through increasing world population, climate change and restricted use of classical pesticides.
