Resumen:
Resistant pneumococci have increased their relative abundance at Sor María Ludovica pediatric hospital since their first report in 1982. Up to date, they represent 14,3% of the isolates from cerebrospinal fluid, 35,3% from blood cultures, 33,3% from pleural fluid and 75 % from bronchial secretions. Although resistance in other hospitals and the community has not reached these levels, these microorganisms are increasingly isolated elsewhere in Argentina. The PBPs of a few resistant isolates (with MICs of 4 mg/l for penicillin G) were compared with a similarity resistant pneumococci obtained from an adult male outpatient from Instituto Lanari, using 125I- Penicillin X as radiotracer. Those from the pediatric hospital showed a double band with a slightly lower size from PBP1 from sensitive microorganisms. On the other hand the profile from the resistant isolate from the other hospital showed a new PBP of lower molecular weight than PBP 2B which is lacking These results suggest that at least two different clones are being disseminated in our geographical area
