Resumen:
Halogenated organic compounds have caused high public concern as organic pollutants. Compounds like DDT, PCBs, and chlorinated dioxins have become symbols of global environmental pollution, and scientific investigations of specific organohalogens have shown that many of them are toxic, persistent and subject to bioaccumulation in food chains. Iodine is an essential trace element that is necessary for normal thyroid function. It is utilized by the thyroid gland for the biosynthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)1-3. On the other hand, an excess of iodine can produce goiter and hypothyroidism as well as hyperthyroidism1-3. Therefore the ingestion of iodine in foods, drugs and water can have profound effects on the thyroid status of individuals. The essential character of iodine, justify most of the research done on this element in samples of environmental origin. In the present work, the use of CE coupled on-line to ICP-MS is proposed for the fast separation and determination of iodophenol species in natural waters. The variables involved in the separation of 2-iodophenol, 4-iodophenol and 2,4,6-triiodophenol were optimized to obtain proper resolution in the shortest time of analysis. The effect of different buffers solutions and additives on the electrophoretic separation of iodophenols compounds was also studied. Additionally, the off-line application of solid-phase microextraction permitted to improve the detection limit values to be compatible with the determination of iodophenol species in natural waters.
