Resumen:
In this paper we discuss the meaning of formal limitations in Economic Theory and conclude that they have to be solved without compromising the intuitions that are widely accepted by theoreticians. Then, we focus on one of major limitations denounced by the opponents to the mainstream, the uncomputability of choice functions. We show how two simple adjustments to the underlying formal foundations of Economics (the introduction of oracles and of the Axiom of Determinacy) may allow to keep “good” results without changing the mathematical toolbox used by economists. These changes carry, however, a diverging view of the cognitive abilities of economic agents. Keywords: computability; Edgeworth conjecture; set theory; general equilibrium.computability; Edgeworth conjecture; set theory; general equilibrium.
