Resumen:
The intensification of agriculture increases the possibility of contaminating natural water courses, making it necessary to develop methodologies for the remediation of agrochemicals, including herbicides. In a previous work it was verified that TiO2 supported on magnetite (denominated FST-5) was effective to degrade tartrazine dye. In this work, the efficiency of FST-5 in the degradation of the herbicide metsulfuron methyl present in a commercial formulation under different reaction conditions was investigated and comparing its behavior with that of unsupported TiO2, comparing the catalytic behavior under artificial irradiation and solar irradiation. Under optimal working conditions and at a near-neutral pH, FST-5 degraded almost 70% of the herbicide´s initial concentration in three and a half hours of irradiation. Its activity was similar to unsupported TiO2, with the advantage that the magnetic support facilitates its subsequent removal of the treated water samples. These characteristics indicate that FST-5 is a good alternative for the remediation of effluents contaminated with this herbicide.
