Resumen:
The present study wasaimed at analyzing alkalinity-induced changes in the primary leaf metabolome ofthe L. japonicus ecotypes GifuB-129 and Miyakojima MG-20. The two ecotypes wereevaluated under control (without salt) and alkaline (10mM NaHCO3) conditions. GasChromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of shoot extracts from bothecotypes was performed, along with measurements of growth, phosphorus andavailable iron concentrations.Alkalinity induced ahigher detrimental effect in terms of chlorosis and survival inAlkalinized Gifu B-129plants, with respect to MG-20 ones. The analysis yielded 41 different, quantifiable metabolites, including aromatic organic acids (AOA), amino acids(AA), sugars and polyols. We have found some genotype-specific metabolites. Atthe same time, some metabolites were differentially affected by alkalinity ineach genotype. We can conclude that thehigher tolerance of MG-20plants, compared with GifuB-129 could be related, atleast in part, to the differential accumulation of citric, citramalic, lacticand phosphoric acids, and other organic metabolites.
