Resumen:
Localized Structures in Physics and Chemistry is a Special Issue dedicated to Helmut R. Brand on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Helmut R. Brand, currently professor of theoretical physics at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, has played a leading role in modeling systems supporting localized dissipative structures and in the characterization of the corresponding solutions and their interaction. Localized structures in systems out of equilibrium are stabilized by a complex balance between nonlinearity and dispersion as well as between energy and/or matter input and matter output and/or dissipation. This concept generalizes the conservative soliton to a dissipative soliton (DS) [1,2]. DSs have been found in a wide spectrum of experiments: binary fluid convection [3,4], sheared electroconvection in liquid crystals [5], Faraday instability in granular media [6], colloidal suspensions [7], surface reactions [8], and nonlinear optics [9?11].
