Resumen:
Vascularconnections between parasitic plants and their hosts allow thepassage of water, nutrients, and nucleic acids. Consequently,parasitic relationships facilitate the exchange of geneticinformation, a process known as horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Mostcases of plant-to-plant HGT involve the mitochondrial and nucleargenomes. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the mitochondrialgenome (mtDNA) of the angiosperm holoparasite Ombrophytumsubterraneum(Balanophoraceae). Total DNA extraction and massive sequencing withIllumina technology were performed. The mtDNA assembly was carriedout based on information of the Illumina paired-end reads. The genomeis composed of 54 independent circular chromosomes (4-27kb) totaling713,777 bp. This multipartite chromosomal architecture was recentlydescribed in a close relative, Lophophytummirabile.Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analyses were performed to assess theevolutionary history of each gene and BLAST searches to unveil theorigin of intergenic regions. About 25% of the genes were associatedwith species of the Family Asteraceae, indicating that they weretransferred from asterid hosts. Most foreign genes co-exist withnative homologs in the mitochondrial genome of O.subterraneum.Additional studies are required to understand which copy isfunctional. The presence of introns and foreign intergenic regionsflanking foreign genes support the mitochondrial fusion compatibilitymodel via mitochondrion-to-mitochondrion horizontal transfer.p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; direction: ltr; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height: 115%; text-align: left; }p.western { font-family: "Arial", serif; font-size: 11pt; }p.cjk { font-family: "Arial"; font-size: 11pt; }p.ctl { font-family: "Arial"; font-size: 11pt; }
