Resumen:
The Pilcomayo River flood events and overflows are a binational issue concerning the fair distribution of the resource. The ultimate aim of this paper is to study the flood of the Pilcomayo River that took place from January 29th 2014 to February 7th 2014, and its overflow based on the analysis of available satellite images, gauging data, and water levels. A one-dimensional hydraulic model with HEC-RAS is applied in order to approximate the overflows hydrograph. The analysis presented in this work allowed us to evaluate the event recurrence at Misión La Paz, estimated at 1.1 years, the overflow volume in the order of 72 hm3, as well as the front face velocity of 6.80 km/day in 14 hours. We also studied the area of flooded regions and bed movement in gauge sections before and after the flood event.
