Resumen:
Most of the interaction of a spider with the substrate where it lives occurs just on the tips of their legs. Because of that, the different life styles have a profound impact on the anatomy of their feet. After the invention of aerial webs, some spiders interacted most of their life time with a self-made substrate of thin cables, with controlled spacing and thickness; their legs are reminiscent of Swiss knifes, with precisely oriented claws and serrate setae. On the other hand, other spiders abandoned the use of a prey-capture web, and relied on tufts of setae to interact with less predictable surfaces, directly engaging with preys, and even adhering to the smoothest surfaces. We review the anatomy and evolution of the spider feet, and show that the articulations at the tip of the legs appeared many times in a conserved, homologous weakness line, with similar design principles yet very diverse configurations.
