RATIONALE: Galectin (Gal-1), an endogenous lectin play a critical role in regulation of the immune response. The purpose of this work was to study the occurrence of circulating IgE and IgG anti Gal-1 antibodies in asthmatic patient. METHODS: IgE and IgG anti Gal-1 antibodies were assessed by ELISA in sera from patients with multiple sensitization and severe asthma (n: 20), moderate asthma (n: 20) mild asthma (n:10) and only one sensitization to Sorghum (n:10) or C. tala (n:10) and compared with healthy control subjects (n:10). RESULTS: IgE and IgG anti Gal-1 were increased in sera from patients with Sorghum and C. tala sensitization as well as in severe asthma with multiple sensitization when compared with moderate and mild asthmatic patients and control group (p<0.0001) CONCLUSIONS: IgE and IgG anti Gal-1 antibodies are present in sera from patients with only one sensitization to pollens as well as in patients with severe asthma.
