Resumen:
Galectin-1 has been associated with proliferation, migration and invasion of malignant gliomas. Here we analyzed galectin-1 expression in glioma cells lines, the effects of ionizing radiation and the influence of galectin-1 on proliferation and migration. Gal-1 was expressed in all 12 cell lines analyzed by Western blot and flow cytometry. Levels of Gal-1 were higher in the tumor than in normal brain and higher in cell lines with wild-type compared with mutated p53. Irradiation induced Gal-1 expression. Recombinant Gal-1 moderately enhanced proliferation in U118 cells and migration in A172 cells and glioma cells. Intereference RNA-mediated downregulation of galectin-1 expression resulted in reduced proliferation of A172 cells and migratory capacity in studied glioma cells lines. We consider that Gal-1 to be an interesting target to treat malignant gliomas that should be downregulated before radiotherapy.
