Instructions for travelers and the organization of fieldwork in archaeology and anthropology, 1870-1920

In this paper I will focus on two aspects of archaeology/anthropology of the first half of 20th century: first, the emergence of the field as a space to be controlled by professionals, and, second, the instructions and handbooks for priests, tourists, and commissioners that continued to shape the gathering of anthropological data. These two aspects also relate to the problem of how professionals learnt to work in the field.
