Nearshore temperate reef ecosystems are highly productive and the fish and shellfish which inhabit them provide a variety of economic and recreational opportunities for coastal residents. However, nearshore reefs also present unique management problems due to the high longevity of their inhabitants, vulnerability to depletion, complex stock structure over small spatial scales, and conflicting demands for their use. Nevertheless, the small scales involved and limited economic importance of these resources often necessitates managing them on the basis of limited stock assessment and monitoring data.
