ABSTRACT In this work, an analysis of textbooks is carried out in order to establish some relationship with the findings of researches performed about the difficulties students have with their first learnings of Algebra. In particular, the development of the subject ?equations? is studied. Considering the most common textbooks used at school, categories of analysis are generated, some examples of these categories are: introduction to equations, sequence developed, thematic position of equations, reference to History of Algebra, examples given, exercises proposed and symbolization. The results aim at elaborating some recommendations for the design of didactic materials.
