Resumen:
In this article, we describe the architectural layout of the Palo Blanco village (AD 1?1000), located in the Fiambalá Valley(Tinogasta, Catamarca, Argentina). The data used in our analysis consists of the results of excavations from the 1960s, recentarchaeo-geophysical survey, the material culture recovered from these excavations, and data regarding the site-formationprocesses. The distinctive features of Palo Blanco village architecture are (1) the use of the tapial (wetted earth compressedin a formwork) construction technique; (2) structures with regular shapes and right-angle corners; (3) dwellings composedof a set of enclosures with a perimeter wall, the total area of which increase with time; and (4) the absence of enclosureswith ceremonial purposes (e.g., mounds, platforms). Typical L-shape enclosures have only been found as parts of the dwellingsinhabited between the first and fifth centuries. This evidence contradicts previous models of the systematic use of the plannedscattered-Saujil architectural layout. We then discuss the sociopolitical implications of the standardization of architecturalpractices over time.
