Resumen:
The depth at which the highly conducting layer of the upper mantle, the conductosphere, begins under the Indian shield isestimated. To do this, the geomagnetic daily variations measured north of the magnetic equator are separated intocontributions of internal and external origin, and from the latter an analytical representation for the ionospheric currentsystem is inferred. The external field produced by this current and the field induced by it in a two-layer conductivity modelof the Earth consisting of an insulator overlying a perfect conductor are obtained. The total field thus calculated iscompared with the data to obtain the conductosphere depth. The conductosphere below the Indian shield is found to be located at approximately 1000 km, well below the averageglobal value, in agreement with previous findings below the African shield. This result supports the hypothesis that there is acorrelation between the deep conducting structure of the Earth and some tectonic features.
