Resumen:
An h-adaptive unstructuredmesh refinement strategy to solve unsteadyproblems by the finite element method ispresented. The maximum level of refinementfor the mesh is prescribed beforehand. Thecore operation of the strategy, namely theelements refinement, is described in detail.It is shown through numerical tests that oneof the advantages of the chosen refinementprocedure is to keep bounded the decrease ofthe mesh’s quality. The type of element is notchanged and no transition templates are used,therefore hanging nodes appear in the adaptedmesh. The 1-irregular nodes refinement constraintis applied and the refinement processdriven by this criterion is recursive. Boththe strength and weakness of the adaptivityalgorithm are mentioned, based on clock timemeasures and implementation issues. To showthe proper working of the strategy, an axisymmetric,compressible non-viscous startingflow in a bell-shaped nozzle is solved over anunstructured mesh of hexaedra.
