Resumen:
The study of CO2 capture has primarily focused on analyzing standalone separation technologies, including absorption, adsorption, membranes, and cryogenics, with relatively limited research on integrated and hybrid approaches. This study aims to assess the potential of hybrid membrane and amine-based processes for CO2 capture. A rigorous model of the membrane-based process is developed in Aspen Custom Modeller and integrated with the amine-based process model in the ASPEN simulator. Simulation-based optimization is employed to optimize operating conditions, including process stream flow rates, pressures, temperatures, compositions, and equipment sizing. Various alternative designs are in-depth analyzed and compared in terms of their merits, identifying novel integration opportunities for coupling membrane and amine-based processes through innovative heat exchanger configurations rather than conventional sequential setups. These novel integration schemas are cost-effectiveness due to the significant reductions on steam, cooling water, and heat transfer area requirements. This work contributes to the development of more effective CO2 capture strategies. The outcomes present valuable insights into combining existing technologies to advance the field of carbon capture. These findings provide a foundation for future works in optimizing hybrid CO2 capture processes, taking into account energy and cost considerations, environmental impact, as well as flexibility and controllability aspects.
