Frontiers in turbidite dynamics: the traction carpet; An outcrop-laboratory combined approach

The modfel of the traction carpet is revised. The field wortk on the submarine channel conglomerates of Baja California, together with experiments on bedload rich turbidites using high-density plastic grains to enhance bedload transport under low-energy hyperpicnic flows, suggests bedload behaves quite similar as in the base of normalto hyperconcentrated fluvial streams. The conclusions suggest that the Lowe (1986) is not valid, and that frictional freezing is not a plausible depositional mechanism, while grain-to-grain interactions and bedload formation play a major role in bedload transport and deposition.
