Resumen:
This article analyzes the symbolic universe of tango during the inter-war period, unveiling diverse subjectivities akin to contemporary processes of social identification and differentiation. We have previously dealt with both the (late) articulation of a middle-class identity in Argentina during the Peronist years, and the practices of distinction/identification that made it possible. Here we take up the latter theme by analyzing the ways in which tango lyrics constructed moral and social boundaries, which would later become crucial to the articulation of middle-class subjectivities. Although in the analyzed tangos predominates a popular subjectivity and the image ?the people? (as opposed to any hint of middle-class identification), tango topics such as decency and morality, neighborhood, home, the modern and nostalgia allow us to look into diverse practices of distinction and processes of social differentiation and identification opening a window to the heterogeneous processes of middle-class formation in Argentina.
