Resumen:
This seminar examines the problem of subjectivity in self-translation practices. It will be argued that the category of ethos (Amossy 2009, 2010, 2014) is productive to explore the distinctive nature of literary self-translation. Drawing from both sociological and discursive paradigms, the reworking of ethos has been defined as the elaboration of the set of socio-discursive elements and procedures which enable speakers to restore, modify or transform the image an audience may have of them in a new discursive situation (Amossy, 2010). Amossy?s notion, typically used in the study of political and literary discourse, seems quite relevant to assess the configuration of subjectivity in self-translated discourse. Our methodological proposal is put to a test through the analysis of a corpus of self-translated texts authored by so-called Latina writers in Latin America and the US. Accordingly, the goal of this presentation is two-fold: to articulate a model which, based on the notion of reworking of ethos, can account for the singularity of self-translated discourse, and to contribute, on the analytical level, to the study of self-translation in the field US Latina literatures.
