The first Latin American molecular biology laboratory came onto the scientific scene in Argentina in early 1957, only to be dismantled in 1962, following a ministerial change. This paper explores the social, political, institutional and cognitive interactions present in this short experience, and assesses their importance to understanding the development of a new scientific field in a ‘peripheral context.’
