The INBIOFIV performs the bioprospecting of medicinal plants from different ecoregions of Argentina in order to validate their popular use, searching for new natural active agents that can be used in the development of phytotherapeutic / phytocosmetic products. The popular uses of more than 100 medicinal species in the region "Valles Calchaquies" and "Puna Argentina" were scientifically validated. Plant species with antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tirosinase, anti-collagenase, anti-elastase, anti-hyaluronidase activities, were detected. The chemical composition of extracts obtained from these plants was determined in order to standardize them to be used as active ingredients in phytotherapeutic or phytocosmetic formulations. Flavonoids, lignans, tannins, and phenolic acid were identified and quantified in each of them. Then, the toxigenetic studies were realized to ensure its safe use. After chemical and biological standardization of phytoextracts, phytocosmetic formulations were developed such as creams, gels, emulsions, fluids and concentrates with anti-aging, astringent, healing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. In some cases, they were combined with apicultural products such as honeys and propolis or native fruits. The microbiological, physicochemical and biological stability of the formulations was analyzed in the short, medium and long term. The production of derivative products of phytoextracts will allow to give greater added value to these plant species to promote their sustainable use by the inhabitants of the region.
