Resumen:
Most of the subtropical llex specíes have recalci t r ant seeds and therefore, notsuitab le for long-term preservatíon us ing conventional seed storage methods, Thus.the germplasm of Ilex spp. is mai ntained in the fleld as ex siru gene banks. This workdescribes experilments dern onstrating th c fea stbitírv 01' lon g-t er-m conservation of I.dumosa through criopreservation of both whole sceds a nd zygo t íc r udimentarycmbrvos. Lately, Ihis sp ecies has receíved gr ca te r attention from plant breed crsbecause, bcsld es the qualttv of lts IC3n s for making the stímulat ory beveragc narn ed'maté' with less caffeine th an th e unes from t. paruguariensis, th e plants are rcsistantto sorne pcsts.
