The purpose of this article is to show that American linguistics, in its development from the decade of 1920 to the turn of the century, constitutes a complex controversy space where opposing sides share a common ground. The framework of this study is the theory of controversy spaces developed by Nudler (2004, 2009, 2010), which accounts for the dialectal nature of change in the sciences and philosophy.
