Resumen:
The excessive input of nutrients to water bodies would result in eutrophication. The accumulation of nutrients leads to fast growth of aquatic plants and algae, leading to depletion of dissolved oxygen. Numerous efforts have been performed in the field of wastewater remediation to reduce concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in urban and industrial effluents discharge (o in sewage discharge). The Bahía Blanca estuary (BBE) receives the largest input of nutrients and contaminants provided by the sewage discharges from Bahía Blanca, Punta Alta e Ingeniero White cities. Magnetic adsorbents materials based on biopolymers have gained special attention in the last decade. These materials have the advantages of being biodegradable and rentable. However, their most interesting characteristic is related to the possibility to be removed from the media by a simple magnet and their reutilization during several cycles. The main aim of this work is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of water in natural environments taking the BBE as a case of study. Different magnetic materials based on biopolymers and magnetite have been designed and applied. Water samples were collected from BBE and were processed and assayed with magnetic adsorbents to minimize the concentration of nutrients (nitrite and nitrate).
