Resumen:
Microwave (MW) presents remarkable characteristics such as very fast heating and better homogeneity in temperature. Also, MW has a series of advantages when is compared with the applications of other traditional technologies, that is, better recovery of volatiles compounds, lower pollution levels, lesser volumes of the required reagents, more reproducible procedures, and better operating environment. The implementation of electromagnetic energy to sample preparation by the analytical chemists came several years after the appearance of the first article published on the topic at the beginning of the 70s by A. A. Samra et al. The use of MW as a tool in analytical chemistry is nowadays one of the most important applications in sample preparation. MW sample treatment has been established as a standard method for preparation of samples for elemental analysis. The MW sample-preparation procedures can be performed in a continuous way or can be coupled on-line to other analytical steps.
